Ever since my days as an engineering intern - where a co-worker spoke about wanting to build his own obd2 reader... I've wanted to build one myself. That was in 2009, now 5 years later I am finally doing it.
The idea was in the back of my mind for years of course, but with school work in the way I never started. One day in mid summer 2013, a friend of mine mentioned some podcast called 'The Amp Hour'. After I listened to the first few episodes I was hooked! My love of electronics and tinkering with embedded systems re-ignited and away I went. I bought a $40 oscilloscope. I retrieved my Hakko soldering Iron from storage and readied it to melt solder. There was just one hurdle in my way: I absolutely HATED putting together circuits using just through hole components, on those perf-boards. What was a guy to do?
November 2013 rolls around and I am just googling around for prices of circuit boards, I've done it in the past but all I got were dashed hopes and dreams upon seeing the prices of a double sided board of any appreciable quality. Then out of the blue I stumble upon OSHPark.com! Oh glorious! Oh is this too good to be true?! It isn't and I immediately download KiCad to start on my very first circuit board.
After a couple test boards, I eventually order the first version of my CAN-obd2 board.

While my friends and I don’t do a lot of mechanical work, we’re interested in trying one of these on our vehicles as we all like to do preventative maintenance. wireless obd2 scanner Should be fun putting this together. I’ve been getting into electronics since I earned my ham radio license and this looks like something I might do under the right supervision.
